.
I just finished reading a wonderful memoir by Sarah Cunningham. She has written a beautifully witty and absorbing book called Picking Dandelions. She’s not a woman who sits around talking about the problems in the world around her, or even in herself without working towards a solution. She actually DOES something to make communities in need a lot better. In her book she tells stories about times when she’s seen great need, been prompted to act, and then overcome obstacles in order to do the hard work of transforming those broken places.
What I love about Sarah’s story, is that she’s done really amazing and huge things like working in intense intercity projects in Chicago and going to Ground Zero within days of the attacks on the Twin Towers, but she also doesn’t downplay the significance of the everyday. From learning to plant a garden, to understanding how to respect the students she teaches so they’re best motivated to learn and grow, she sees everyday scenarios as opportunities for growth.
Jean Vanier says, “Growth begins when we begin to accept our own weakness.” This is a truth Sarah expresses with beauty and clarity as she talks about our need to change and grow. On Sarah’s journey to value growth, she consulted people close to her and searched herself to determine the ways in which she could best grow into the person it is she hopes to become. She uses her wonderful sense of humor mixed with the adventures she lives everyday to challenge and encourage her readers to become the people we all hope to be.
We think you should read the book! We know you won’t be sorry!
