We’ve recently become big fans of Divine Chocolates.  As we’ve become more educated on the slave labor associated with a lot of what we consume, we’ve learned that chocolate production is among the highest in using slave labor to harvest cocoa.  Divine began to explore what it would look like to start a company that fairly paid their farmers, and also gave them pride in what they were producing.

At the heart of Divine’s heavenly tasting chocolate there is a unique story. Not only do the Kuapa Kokoo farmers’ receive a Fairtrade price for their cocoa, but they also own 45% of the company, therefore have a direct influence over how the company is run and share in the profits from the chocolate.
Choosing Divine as your chocolate treat is a delicious way of playing your part in a more equitable trading partnership. Divine is the only Fairtrade chocolate company which is 45% owned by the farmers. While Fairtrade ensures farmers receive a better deal for their cocoa and additional income to invest in their community, company ownership gives farmers a share of Divine’s profits and a stronger voice in the cocoa industry. That’s good business!

Beyond Divine’s commitment to their farmers, they also strive to be environmentally responsible.  As a responsible company Divine is conscious of its environmental impact, and are committed to continuously make improvements to reduce it. They don’t use airfreight at any stage of our supply chain, and keep up to date with best practice regarding all the materials we use. Their packaging is reviewed annually, and while ensuring our products are all kept protected and delicious, they want to make sure they look lovely and irresistible with as little packaging as possible. Latest developments include keeping Easter Egg packaging to a minimum with no plastic, using cornstarch trays inside our chocolate boxes, and most recently, removing the cellophane wrapper from the Divine Advent Calendars.

Divine has some wonderful resources for teachers on their website, so they can educate their students on fairtrade practices and integrating activities with students that will hopefully cause them to be more conscientious consumers!

We know you want the good stuff, so here’s a link where you can buy their chocolate!
