I have been watching some stories, and reading the articles about the earthquakes in Haiti, along with the rest of the world. The images are absolutely devastating. I’ve been drawn in and feel connected to what is happening because of the media coverage. I’ve found myself feeling guilty at times in how I take in such devastation. I am glued to my computer screen, watching video after video of the ruined buildings and bodies of someone else’s loved ones. I’d like to think our obsession with seeing the suffering has something more to do with our deep desire to do something about it, more than it is about satisfying our own curiosity.
In my hope that this is true about me, just as it is about you, we want to give some ways that we can all help. It will turn our curiosity into tangible care to those who need it, and our interest into action.
These are some organizations doing good.
Or the easiest way we found to give financially, is to text “Haiti” to 90999 and it will charge your phone bill $10 and the money will go to relief efforts in Haiti. Similarly, Musician Wyclef Jean, who’s from Haiti, says if you text “Yele” to 501501, you’ll automatically be donating $5 to the Yele Haiti Earthquake Fund. The charge will show up on your phone bill.
Let’s not just watch, if you’re able, let’s DO something about their suffering. Let’s help to restore this broken country. Maybe we would be willing to join them just a LITTLE in their suffering, by giving up something we want, in order to be able give to them instead.
